Q: What does P.T.A. stand for ? How did our school receive the P.T.A. National School of Excellence seal?

A: Parent Teachers Association or PTA was founded in 1897. It provides support, information and resources to families focused on the health and education of children. The organization was founded in 1897. The National School of Excellence Seal was received by Forest Edge in 2005 for a level of parent involvement demonstrated.

 

Q: Why is Forest Edge called a School of Communication and Technology?

A: SmartBoards, scanners, digital cameras, interactive encyclopedias, Internet access, Windows on Science, Hands-On Science, a fully automated library, and a minimum of three computers in each classroom help us achieve our technological goals. As a Technology Focus School, Forest Edge integrates technology into all phases of its program. As a SmartBoard pilot school, these wonderful teaching tools bring this interactive technology into the hands of all our staff and students.

Q: How do I find out more about the Gifted and Talented Program ? What is the difference between GT and a Magnet School?

A: For a thorough explanation of the Fairfax County's GT Program go to http://www.fcps.edu/DIS/gt/center.htm. Other FCPS magnet schools (Hunters Woods, etc.) have programs that are dedicated to a particular subject. In the case of Hunters Woods, it's Arts and Science.

Q: What is my school's pyramid ?

A: Forest Edge is a part of the Langston Hughes, South Lakes High School pyramid, cluster VII.

Q: How many children are at Forest Edge? How many teachers? How many support staff?

Q: Who do I speak to in regards to policy? Who are the policy/decision makers related to education?

A: In FCPS, there are 7 to 8 key policy makers who directly impact Forest Edge's many school policies. In other words, decisions such as making full day kindergarten become a reality. There is the Fairfax County School Board .

 

Members of the community are invited and encouraged to attend public meetings of the School Board to observe its deliberations. The Board holds business meetings in the Board Room at Jackson Middle School, 3020 Gallows Rd., Falls Church. Fairfax County residents who want to present their views to the School Board may sign up online only between 6 and 11 a.m. on the Monday preceding the board meeting. After that period, residents may sign up online or by telephone at 571-423-1060.
