After School PTA-sponsored Clubs
At Forest Edge, we are fortunate to have a very active, committed PTA. Parent volunteers participate almost daily inside and outside the classroom to support programs and events that enhance the school curriculum and extend the learning experience beyond the school building and grounds. Forest Edge has a wide range of after school programs that are very unique and not found many other schools in our area.
The following provides brief descriptions of this year’s PTA After School programs and committees.
After School Tennis: Fun, age appropriate tennis lessons are provided at a reasonable cost to students. A parent volunteer coordinates with professional tennis instructors from Reston Association to schedule classes (held in the school gym). The volunteer will advertise classes, collect fees, notify students of class schedule, and arrange payment to Reston Association. Coordinator: Jill Neaves, jillneaves@aol.com, 703-582-8916.
Foreign Language Lessons: This committee organizes before and after school language programs for students. Services are offered through the School System. Organizers are needed to contact French or Spanish teachers, determine student interest levels (through flyers and surveys), enroll students and coordinate rooms. Coordinators: Mary Pope, dave.marypope@verizon.net, 571- 434-6136 or Justine van Engen, jvanengen@cbmove.com, 703- 435-1896.
Odyssey of the Mind: Odyssey of the Mind (OM) is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students. Kids work together on a team to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Parents are needed to coach teams for 3rd - 6th graders. FE has had many teams place in regional and state finals. We’ve even had a team win the World OM competition. Coordinators: Sangeeta Sarkar, sangeeta.sarkar@fcps.edu, 703 668-0722 or Soumya Sarkar, 703 668-0722.
Reflections Contest: This Committee works from September through December to promote and coordinate the National PTA "Reflections" contest. This competition includes writing, visual arts and music categories. Volunteers help hang art, process entries, coordinate judging, obtain prizes, prepare certificates and coordinate a daytime awards reception. Coordinators: Leigh Banducci, mlband123@verizon.net, 703-707-2232 or Patti George, patti@george-home.com, 703-481-6060.
LOGO Computer Programming: Forest Edge’s new Computer programming club will teach the fundamentals of computer programming using LOGO computer programming language. LOGO is a fun way to teach children computer programming. They will write commands by asking a LOGO turtle to draw shapes, graphics and designs. They will use free LOGO programming software and a book to learn various computer programming commands. Children will let their imagination run wild by learning to write instructions to design shapes, play with colors, create music and solve puzzles. Click here for a pdf with more information. Coordinators: Tim Bond, teambond@gmail.com or Venkat Puvvada, pvr@comcast.net
Girls on the Run: Girls on the Run is a life-changing, experiential learning program for girls in grades 3-6. The program combines training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The goals of the program are to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, and physical development. The club uses an innovative and fun curriculum designed exclusively for pre-teen girls to address specific life skills through the use of games, warm-ups and workouts. (About half of each practice is spent on games & warm-ups with the other half spent on the workout.) There are 2 sessions of Girls on the Run each year. The Fall session runs from late September through early December; the Spring session runs from late February through early May.If you are interested or have questions, contact: Mary York at bruceandmaryyork@att.net or 571-203-9080.
